All we can do to Care

The Prince of Wales Hospice has been supporting patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families since 1989. We are passionate about supporting people and their families in a positive, caring and practical way.  We think of ourselves as an integral part of the Five Towns’ community, offering round-the-clock support 365 days a year.

We are an adult only Hospice and our dedicated team provides a wide range of services to improve the quality of life for our patients, their families and carers. This may include practical, financial, emotional and spiritual support to help them through difficult times.

Our services

  • Day Therapy – for patients who are living relatively well at home and just need to visit one day a week.

Last year nearly 100 people were supported in this way, benefitting from care, therapies and activities tailored to their physical and emotional needs. They visited the hospice a total of 550 times between them.

  • Incare – for people who need to stay a while in one of the Hospice’s bedrooms.

Last year, over 280 patients were admitted to stay in one of the Hospice’s 14 bedrooms. About half of our patients return home when they are stronger and their symptoms, such as pain, are better controlled. We are privileged to be able to provide comfort and dignity to others at the end of their life.

  • Family care team – supporting those who are around our patients, who may themselves be providing care.

We also look after carers and families, giving emotional and practical support. We can help source equipment and care for patients to be able to return home after a stay. And we can help families as they adjust to the loss of their loved one.

  • Lymphoedema clinic – treating people with the painful swelling condition which can be hereditary or occur after cancer surgery.

Almost 1,000 out-patient appointments were held at our Lymphodema clinics last year, including referrals from 120 brand new patients – it’s a service in high demand.

All of our services are provided free of charge to patients. But it costs £2.4m a year (£6,500 per day) to run the Hospice – just a third of which comes from the NHS. For the rest we rely on your support through our shops, fundraising events, donations and fundraising initiatives in our communities and local companies. Even a small gift can make a difference:-

Just £17.00 can fund a nurse’s care for an hour – providing up to three patients with pain relief, help to move, assistance at meal times and emotional support.

£50 can run all the services needed to run an incare bedroom for a morning – from medical and nursing care, to family support; from providing nutritious food, to the rigorous cleaning that helps keep our rooms infection-free.

£120 provides our in-care patients with the support of a doctor overnight

£450  Allows us to deliver inspirational care to one of our in-patients for 24 hours

£1,400  Will enable us to fund a transport service for our day therapy patients for 3 months

£2,000 Could pay for all the nursing time and supplies needed to run a bedroom for a week.
